First-time home buyers in Houston have a great selection of homes to choose from. At RedFish Inspections, we want to help you narrow down your choices. There are ten key factors to consider during your house hunting quest, five of which are outlined below. (View our previous post for the first five factors.)
6. The Bedrooms and Bathrooms
Once you’ve decided if a home’s location and floor plan will work for you, think about the practical elements of the home. How many bedrooms and bathrooms do you really need? A spare room is valuable for guests and a home office, but it’s also more space to clean, furnish, and maintain.
7. The Kitchen
The kitchen is one of the most frequently visited rooms of the home, so make sure it suits your needs. If the kitchen is outdated, remodeling is always an option. But don’t be fooled! Remodels are time intensive, messy, and expensive. Make sure you can handle the expense before purchasing the home.
8. Closets and Storage Space
Your lifestyle dictates the importance of closets and storage space. If you have a lot of toys, sports equipment, decorations, out-of-season clothing, etc., you are going to need somewhere to keep it. Be sure to check out the number and size of the closets, attic, crawl spaces, and basement storage. Is it adequate to hold your belongings?
9. Windows and Lighting
Natural light is a bonus for any home, but so is privacy. Consider the size and location of windows in the home. Are there plenty of spacious windows throughout the house? Are there privacy blinds installed? Also, check out the home’s lighting. Is it ample and up to date?
10. Finishing Touches
Things like molding and quality cabinet hardware complete a home and add to its value. Look for these little details and other extras, like a fireplace, quality faucets, and updated fixtures. Are the little details important to you, or would you rather add your own finishing touches down the road?
